It is also claimed that United and Chelsea are likely to target Gareth Bale as an alternative to the Reds wide-man if one of the other teams involved wins the race for his signature.

Sterling is the preferred option over the more expensive Real Madrid star, who would likely cost around £75m in terms of his transfer fee, as well as wages of £300,000 per week.

Meanwhile, want-away Liverpool youngster Sterling would likely cost closer to £50m, with wages perhaps around half of what Bale would demand, despite his difficulties in agreeing a new deal at Anfield at the moment.

It is claimed by the Mail that Liverpool are increasingly likely to cash in on the England international if he cannot put pen to paper on a new contract, with the club feeling he is not worth such a significant pay rise.
