The Merseyside club have found themselves well off the pace in the race to finish in the Premier League top four , in order to qualify for the Champions League, after a 4-1 defeat to Arsenal. An earlier loss to Manchester United has also not helped them in their quest to get in to Europe’s premier club competition.

This has left the FA Cup as their only chance for success in this campaign, and the game against Blackburn could define their season. Their Northern Irish manager claims that this was always going to be one of their main aims.

He said: “In terms of the FA Cup, that was always an objective. On Wednesday, we’ll look to reach our second semi-final of the season in the cup competitions. We made that a real strong objective for us this season, to do well in the cups, and this is an opportunity to get to another semi-final.”
