Quite how the White Hart Lane side would imagine they’d persuade the Spanish international to leave Old Trafford for a move to north London is hard to fathom.
What is perhaps most peculiar about this potential move is the fact that the Metro claims the imminent bid from Spurs would be to the tune of £18.6m?
That’s less than half the £37m Man United paid Chelsea for Mata and as such is an offer that would be given very short shrift indeed.
The 26 year old netted a superb brace against Liverpool last month and is now a regular in Louis van Gaal’s first team set-up, with British transfer record signing Angel di Maria being left to the warm the bench, which shows just how highly the Dutch manager rates the pint-sized attacker.
Given that Tottenham are also unlikely to secure a Champions League berth, the chances of Mauricio Pochettino landing Mata are slim to none.
