Herrera moved to Old Trafford in a £29m transfer only last summer, but his recent impressive performances have caught the eye of the Spanish giants, as they look to inject youth into their ageing midfield.
According to reports in Spanish daily Mundo Deportivo, Luis Enrique is considering tabling a bid for the 25-year-old in the next transfer window, viewing the midfielder as a successor to Xavi, who, according to Sky Sports, is close to agreeing a move to Qatari outfit Al Sadd.
The former Athletic Bilbao star is in fine form at present, having bagged a brace in the weekend victory over Aston Villa, taking his tally to five Premier League goals in his debut campaign in England’s top-flight.
Team-mate Juan Mata even went so far as hailing Herrera as a genius in his blog on Monday morning.
But the idea of Herrera replacing the Barca legend is rather farfetched, and it would take one hefty sum for Louis van Gaal to even consider selling the promising Spaniard.
