The Reds face stiff competition for his summer signature from the likes of Premier League rivals Arsenal and Serie A side Napoli, according to the Metro.

However, they will hope the emotional ties formed with the player during his first stint on Merseyside between January 2007 and the summer of 2009 will swing the transfer tussle in their favour.

The 32-year-old has failed to secure a regular starting berth at the Bernabeu this term under manager Carlo Ancelotti and would be available for a modest fee due to the fact his contract has only one year left to run.

Napoli boss Rafael Benitez worked with Arbeloa at Liverpool but is not guaranteed to still be at the helm in Naples next term. The uncertainty surrounding his future could put Liverpool and the Gunners in the driving seat in the race for the full-back’s signature.
