It is believed that manager Louis van Gaal has made the 28-year-old his number one summer transfer target and is willing to pay a huge fee to lure him to Old Trafford and match his wages to that of captain Wayne Rooney.
They could face stiff competition from league rivals Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool, who are all reportedly keeping close tabs on the striker that has bagged 18 goals in all competitions for French champions this year despite having to play out of position at various times throughout the course of the campaign.
The report goes on to add that the strike duo of Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao – both of whom have struggled to make an impact under the new regime this season – could be offloaded in order to fund a move for Cavani.
Falcao’s loan deal is set to expire at the end of the season, and after scoring just four league goals all campaign, there has been no word just yet as to whether that deal will be made permanent, while van Persie has been out of action since February after picking up a injury in the defeat against Swansea.
