(Image) Manchester City take shot at United, reminding them of 6-1 demolition

Manchester City have fuelled the fire ahead of the weekend’s derby with United, by posting a photo showing the contrasting emotions between both sets of fans after their 6-1 thrashing of Sir Alex Ferguson’s side in 2011.

The game was one of the darkest days during Ferguson’s illustrious tenure. After Mario Balotelli had given the away side the lead – and revealed the “Why Always Me” shirt – Jonny Evans was dismissed just after the break. The current Liverpool striker, Balotelli would double the lead on the hour-mark, with Sergio Aguero adding a third, nine minutes later.

Darren Fletcher’s strike ten minutes from time should have been the catalyst for a comeback, but it only seemed to fire Roberto Mancini’s men up even more. Two quickfire goals from Edin Dzeko, and another from David Silva finished the humiliation.

That season, City’s two wins over United helped them seal the title in dramatic fashion on the final day. While this weekend’s clash has much less riding on it – with neither side in contention for the title, and seemingly safe in the top four – there is no way that Louis van Gaal nor Manuel Pellegrini can afford to lose, if they want to appease the expectant fans.
