The Brazilian defender is set to end his eight year association with Barcelona when his contract expires at the end of the season after his representative Dinorah Santa Ana revealed that an contract extension at the Camp Nou has been rejected, and United are said to be in the running for his signature.

But according to the report, United have become frustrated with the 31-year-old and have reportedly given him until the end of the month to sign a pre-contract deal otherwise they will withdraw from all negotiations.

Should Alves decide to sign for the Old Trafford outfit in the summer, he would add depth to the defence and provide competition to his Brazil compatriot Rafael for the right-back slot.

United’s fierce rivals Liverpool have also been linked with a move for the former Sevilla man, so it is possible that Alves is waiting to see who claims a Champions League spot before revealing his next destination.
