Striker Sergio Aguero struck after eight minutes, to the delight of Liverpool forward Balotelli, who urged the home faithful to “shut up”.

Balotelli himself has scored in this fixture before, with the infamous ‘Why Always Me’ goal celebration during the 6-1 win in 2011.

The Blues’ lead today did not last long, however, with England international Ashley Young stabbing the ball home from close range soon afterwards to restore parity, before Marouane Fellaini headed the hosts in front just before the half-hour mark.

Balotelli’s joy was shortlived and his original tweet was inevitably met with a mixed response from fans of both sides.

The Italian has failed to make an impact at Liverpool this term, and has hardly featured in recent weeks.

Boss Brendan Rodgers altered his system at the turn of the year, opting for a 3-4-3 formation, and Balotelli does not appear to figure in his plans, with versatile attacker Raheem Sterling often preferred as the lone striker.
