The 29-year-old has forced his way in to the side this season despite Angel Di Maria being bought for a record fee to play in his position last summer. Young has not only been able to displace the Argentinian but also become a key player in the Red Devils’ recent victories over Tottenham, Liverpool, and Manchester City that have consolidated their position in the Premier League top four.

The England international said: “I’ve just listened to what the manager has said,” added Young. “He’s wanted to play me and I’ve wanted to go out there and repay him. I was brought in the team to do a job and everyone was magnificent today. Obviously it was a derby so we are delighted to get the win.”

This is surprising as the winger was out of favour under David Moyes last season and looked likely to be on the sidelines again under the 63-year-old. He has now made 20 appearances in the top flight this campaign, scoring twice and creating three other goals.
