Arsenal legend claims Gunners are Chelsea’s biggest threat

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown has backed his former side to be the main challengers to Chelsea for the Premier League crown next season, indicating that he feels the title race this season a forgone conclusion, Sky Sports report.

After smashing home a last minute winner against Queens Park Rangers, Chelsea are now expected to clinch their first league title since 2010, but when they come back in August looking to defend their crown, Keown expects Arsenal to be the Blues main threat.

Sitting in second place, seven points behind Jose Mourinho’s side, Arsenal could record their highest league finish since 2005.

“Chelsea will win it now but if you ask them next season, they won’t fear anyone but they will be aware of Arsenal,” Keown said.

“They will want to challenge next season and they will want to start well next year.

“They need to strengthen in one or two positions but I’m not talking about wholesale changes which some others may have to make if they want to compete.”

When analysing the squad, Arsene Wenger’s massive rebuilding process is almost finally complete following the exodus the club experienced between 2008-2011. A team built around Alexander Hleb, Kolo Toure, Emannuel Adebayor, Cesc Fabregas and Robin van Persie was broken up and a new side has emerged.

A squad which isn’t centred around any individual and with the strength in depth available to Wenger, winning the Premier League must be the aim next season.
