Atletico Madrid striker Mario Mandzukic has come out in support of Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal, despite his rival’s blatant display of petulance during last night’s Champions League clash between the two teams.

As you can see in the clip below, Carvajal clearly punches the Croatian striker while some even accused him of attempting to bite him as well. The defender is likely to be banned over the incident but Mandzukic’s words could yet help his cause.

The pair clashed during Tuesday’s Champions League quarter-final first leg, which ended 0-0. Mandzukic was in the wars throughout the evening, finishing the game with a bloodied nose after a stray elbow from Sergio Ramos.

Serbian referee Milorad Mazic did not spot the incident involving Carvajal which would have likely led to both a penalty and a red card. However, he is now set to be the subject of retrospective action by UEFA.

Reports from Sky Sports carry quotes from both players. Carvajal, who was speaking immediately after the match on social media, said: “I saw after the game that I am accused of biting an opponent player, I want to clarify that I have not bitten anyone, nor attempted to.”

While Mandzukic has since added: “Yesterday’s match was very hard and both teams gave everything, but for me there was no controversy, no bite, or anything.”
