The Blues are on course to lift the Premier League trophy for the first time in five years, sitting seven points clear at the top with a game in hand on nearest challengers Arsenal, but it is thought a centre back would help them conquer Europe again next season.

Frenchman Raphael Varane moved to Real Madrid from Ligue 1 Lens when they were managed by current Chelsea boss Mourinho and the Portuguese manager is said to be a big fan of his.

Los Blancos are expected to resist any interest from Chelsea, meaning they may have to look elsewhere for a defender and Atletico man Godin has emerged as a contender.

The Uruguayan is seven years older than 21-year-old Varane, but following last season’s captures of La Liga winners and Champions League runner-up medals, he has cemented himself as one of the world’s top centre backs.
