The 30-year-old worked with Red Devils manager Louis van Gaal while he was in charge of the Netherlands national team, helping the 63-year-old to guide them in to the semi finals of the competition last summer. This relationship seems to have helped United in the chase for the player, whom the Express claim wants to move to Old Trafford ahead of Juventus, Roma, and Sevilla.

Should van Gaal want his former charge he need only match his £80,000 a week wage demands. However, his stock has fallen, and it is now doubtful whether de Jong is of the requisite standard to play for Manchester United. He struggled to play very regularly while at local rivals Manchester City in 2012, and has aged three years since then.

The defensive midfielder has also been finding it hard to make an impact with the Rossoneri, being in and out of the side under Filippo Inzaghi. He has 21 league appearances for Milan, who are languishing in ninth in Serie A.
