Klopp, who confirmed today that he would be leaving the Bundesliga side at the end of the current campaign, is in line for the top job at either the Etihad Stadium or Allianz Arena depending on circumstances, according to respected Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio.

Di Marzio wrote on his website that City are still in the dark about Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti’s intentions beyond the summer, while the Blues have also not given up on long-term target Pep Guardiola, but the Bavarian giants will block any attempts to lure him away from Germany.

If City somehow succeed in landing the Spaniard, it would open the door for Klopp to take the helm at the  runaway Bundesliga leaders. If Guardiola and Ancelotti do not end up on the blue half of Manchester, Klopp would be a strong favourite to join the champions.

As things stand, of course, City still have a manager in Manuel Pellegrini. However, the Chilean is under intense pressure after a slump in form which has seen his team win only four of their last 15 games in all competitions.

Their faint hopes of retaining their Premier League title have disappeared, and they must now fight for a place in the top-four.
