The England international missed most of the first-half of the season after collecting an injury whilst on international duty in September, only returning in late January. And with his troubles in the past in mind, his manager Brendan Rodgers took a reserved approach to reintegrating him back into the side, seemingly well aware of his both value to the team, and the lack of other genuine goalscoring options available in his absence.

However, that strategy appeared to fail when the 25-year-old had to be taken off with five minutes to go of the quarter-final replay with Blackburn.

According to the Daily Express, Sturridge aggravated a hip problem, and has missed much of the training this week ahead of the clash with Villa, leading to the expectation that he will not be risked for the game.
