The Red Devils are concerned by Strootman’s repeated injury problems in recent times, though a central midfield playmaker of that type seemingly remains a priority for the club in the transfer market.

Pjanic is another impressive creative performer in this Roma side, with Liverpool also known to be showing an interest in his services ahead of the summer as they seek a player to come in and replace departing captain and midfield lynchpin Steven Gerrard.

Still, the Metro now states that United are leading the race to sign the Bosnian international, with the player himself previously ruling out a switch to Anfield.

Instead, Old Trafford may well be the 25-year-old’s next destination as it is claimed he is due to hold talks with Roma this week over his future at the Stadio Olimpico.
