It hasn’t gone the way Daniel Sturridge would have liked this season, injuries have prevented him from kicking on from last year but he hopes to end the campaign on a positive note by helping Liverpool win the FA Cup.

The striker, who is a doubt for the semi-final against Aston Villa at Wembley on Sunday afternoon, was expected to fill the void left by Luis Suarez in the summer and after scoring against Southampton on the opening day of the season, it appeared the England man was ready to step up to the challenge.

But a thigh injury picked up on international duty in September would eventually cost him five months of the season and despite scoring four league goals since returning at the end of January he is still searching for full match sharpness.

He started the FA Cup quarter-final replay against Blackburn Rovers earlier in the month as Liverpool booked their place at Wembley and Sturridge wants to lift the trophy in order to end a difficult season on a high:

“For myself it’s been a difficult season in terms of being able to play but for the club it’s been difficult also.” he told BT Sport ahead of the game (via Mirror Online)

“We’ve not had a great season but we’re in a position now where we can finish in the top 4 and win the FA Cup.”

“And if you had asked people at the start of the season if you can guarantee Champions League football and win some silverware they would have probably been happy.” he explained.
