The England right-back has impressed at times this season during a loan spell at West Ham United, but this blogger argues that despite a great start, his form along with the Hammers’ defensive record has faded as the season has gone on, perhaps seeing him overrated by some.

It is also pointed out that Liverpool have a questionable recent record in signing defenders, with Emre Can the only success story in recent times while Dejan Lovren’s £20m move has been a disaster and Alberto Moreno has been inconsistent at best.

From an Arsenal point of view, the Gunners certainly have better options in Mathieu Debuchy, Calum Chambers and Hector Bellerin – three quality players to block Jenkinson’s return to the team, including two youngsters, while the 23-year-old is not exactly an up-and-coming talent any longer and no longer looks likely to improve greatly.

Aside from that, Jenkinson has never put in that many assured displays for the north London club and is perhaps more popular than merited given his achievements so far.
