Lyon vs. Saint-Etienne Ligue 1 preview: Big ambitions in the Rhone Valley Derby

Posted by

Olympique Lyonnais and AS Saint-Etienne round-off the weekend’s Ligue 1 action when they meet to contest the Rhone Valley Derby on Sunday evening.

When: 8.00 pm GMT, 19 April 2015

Where: Stade de Gerland, Lyon

For Lyon, the home side, this match has immense importance. Not only is it a local derby against their fierce rivals, but it is an opportunity to retake top spot in the table.

Having both played 32 matches, OL and reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain occupy the top two spots in the division. However, it is Laurent Blanc’s side who hold top spot, with Lyon having dropped two points away at Olympique de Marseille, before suffering a shock defeat at home against OGC Nice.

There can be no more slip ups if Hubert Fournier’s side are to deliver on their undoubted promise and lift the French title.

However, in Saint-Etienne they face opponents in fine fettle. The Stephanois are one of only two teams in the division (the other being AS Monaco) not to have lost in their last six matches, while ASSE have won four in that period compared to ASM’s three.

Christophe Galtier’s limited squad may be stretched to their limits, but they will be keen to secure victory and overtake Marseille, to draw level with third-placed Monaco and within touching distance of the Champions League places.
