The game was going to script as Philippe Coutinho put the Reds ahead on the half hour mark but the in-form Christian Benteke equalised six minutes later with his sixth goal in his last four appearances.
Villa captain Fabian Delph completed the turnaround nine minutes into the second half and his side held on to reach the final where they will play Arsenal at the end of next month.
It completes a remarkable change on fortunes for Villa since Tim Sherwood replaced Paul Lambert as manager in February as the former Tottenham boss has guided the club four points clear of the relegation zone and they can now look forward to a first FA Cup final since 2000.
