According to the Daily Express, the 24-year-old has all but signed the contract, but will complete talks later this week, and extend his stay on Merseyside until 2020.

The Express report that the deal will see the former Sunderland man earn £100,000 a week, but he will be able to secure a lot more in bonuses depending on how he and the team play.

Regardless, the news is a massive lift for the Reds. Their FA Cup semi-final defeat to Aston Villa, and their unlikelihood of being able to catch any of the Premier League’s top four, means that their season is now about nothing more than going through the motions. What’s more, the contract situations regarding several players including Henderson and Raheem Sterling threatened to overshadow their summer.  However, the extension to Henderson’s deal is likely to lift some of gloom.
