The Reds went into the game as clear favourites to set up a clash against Arsenal on May 30th and it looked to be heading that way when Philippe Coutinho put them ahead on the half hour mark in the semi-final with a deflected effort.

However, goals from Christian Benteke and Fabian Delph has denied Gerrard the chance to bow out of English football with a piece of silverware on his 35th birthday and he admits that nerves got the better of his side:

“We didn’t play today, we looked very nervous for some reason.” he told talkSport after the game (via Mirror Online)

“We’re a team that’s built on passing and playing it quickly but we were very disappointing in that aspect and they were much better than us.”

With no cup final date on the horizon it means the legendary Reds skipper has just six games remaining until he brings an end to his 17-year association with the Merseyside outfit.
