The 24 year old has thus far resisted attempts by Man United to tie him down to a new deal, with the Spanish international having just one year left on his current contract, and if they are to lose the custodian then the Premier League side will demand £50m for his services.

Sir Alex Ferguson signed de Gea back in 2011 and a move back to the Spanish capital, where he previously represented Atletico Madrid, may tempt the Man United man.

De Gea initially struggled for form, dropping a number of clangers in his first season at the club, but has since matured into one of the best keepers in European football.

Given that Louis van Gaal is likely to secure a return to Champions League football one would have imagined Man United’s chances of persuading de Gea to remain a the club had increased, but seemingly that may not be the case.

The timing for a move to Real Madrid is perhaps ideal for Carlo Ancelotti with his current first choice starter, club legend Iker Casillas, failing to perform consistently this term.
