The contract will keep him at Old Trafford until June 2019, and comes after he has been involved in a good run of form for the Red Devils. Smalling has started alongside Phil Jones during a run of six wins in the last seven matches, creating a strong partnership with the former Blackburn Rovers man.

Smalling has played 147 times for United since making his debut against Chelsea in the Community Shield back in 2010, the same summer that he signed from Fulham. He has scored nine goals in that time for the club and this campaign has been especially prolific, with four strikes to his name.

Manager Louis van Gaal also believes that Smalling has improved his all round game since he has been involved with the team.

He said of the new contract: “Chris has improved and developed immensely during the short time that I have been at the club and has become an integral part of the first-team squad. He always conducts himself in a very professional manner and it is also pleasing that he has scored some important goals this season too. I am delighted he has signed a new contract.”

The player himself also seems very happy to have extended his stay with the side: “I’m delighted to sign my new contract. I am so proud to play for such a great club. We have developed as a team over the course of the season under Louis van Gaal and we are now playing as a complete unit. This is a very exciting time to be at Manchester United, we are all determined to get back to where we belong and competing at the highest level.”
