The club announced the news on their official website and the deal is seen as a reward for Smalling who has become a permanent fixture in the United side over the past few months.
He had forged a strong partnership with fellow England international Phil Jones at the heart of the United defence as they were instrumental in victories against Tottenham, Liverpool and Manchester City in recent weeks.
However an injury to Jones ahead of the game against Chelsea at the weekend saw that partnership and the club’s six-game winning run in the league come to an end in the 1-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge.
Nonetheless it has been as progressive season for Smalling, who signed from Fulham in 2010, he has found the back of the net of four occasions this season which puts him level with Radamel Falcao.
Take a look at how Twitter has reacted to the news:

Not sure on Chris Smalling, watching him play always keeps me on the edge of my seat.. He’s not the most composed of defenders. — Mani (@raymufc83) April 21, 2015
Congrats to Chris Smalling on his new contract. Fully deserved! pic.twitter.com/QhUFFjvF5P

The new contract for Chris Smalling is deserved. He has developed more than Phil Jones, and a lot more than Jonny Evans. #mufc

Much as I like Chris Smalling, I can’t help but hope he’s taken one for the team and forged David De Gea’s signature on that new contract. — pauliegunn (@PaulGunning1) April 21, 2015
