The 34-year-old believes that his compatriot will have more opportunities to impress at the Merseyside club. Depay would have to compete with Angel Di Maria and Ashley Young for his preferred position on the right wing at Old Trafford. Meanwhile he would surely be an automatic starter for Liverpool, who will probably need strengthening to get back in to the Champions League next season.

However, the versatile forward did also admit that Louis van Gaal’s history with the player gave the Red Devils an advantage in the transfer race. The 63-year-old has coached the youngster before, while he was manager of the Holland national team. The 21-year-old was even part of van Gaal’s very successful Dutch side which got to the semi finals of the last World Cup.

Kuyt said: “I look through red glasses, because I’ve played six years for Liverpool. Only when Memphis does that, he will realize how big Liverpool are.

“Of course it would be an advantage at Manchester United because he knows the manager. On the other hand it is important at his age that he plays every week. That’s the only way he can develop.”

Whichever side the winger eventually decides to play for, they will be getting a gem of a player. Depay has 20 goals in the Eredivisie this season, helping his side to win the league title.
