Richards has been at Man City since the age of 13 and had initially impressed once he had broke into the first team set-up, collecting a number of England caps whilst in his pomp, but in recent seasons he had struggled to make an impact and has only made six Serie A starts since moving to Florence.
The Birmingham born defender can fill right-back and central defensive berths effectively and could be a terrific free transfer acquisition when the transfer window reopens.
