The Daily Star reports that the versatile forward is “looking at beautiful leagues” ahead of the summer transfer window, although he refused to go into further specifics.

Whoever lands the hitman will probably have to part with more than £20m for one of the hottest properties in European football.

United boss Louis van Gaal is sure to be hoping that his fellow Dutchman will jump at the chance to work with a compatriot, while the Red Devils are also closing in on Champions League qualification.

It could prove to be a harder sell for their rivals from Merseyside. Head coach Brendan Rodgers has come in for criticism following a poor run of form which has seen them exit the FA Cup at the semi-final stage and fall off the pace for a top-four finish.

Liverpool have failed to build on last season’s second-place finish and are likely to invest heavily in their playing squad again this summer, regardless of whether Depay chooses them or their oldest enemy.
