Louis van Gaal spent an astonishing £150m in his first summer at Old Trafford, as he set out to rebuild the Manchester United squad, and club legend Paul Scholes believes Ander Herrera has been the signing of the season.
The Dutchman brought in Angel di Maria, Radamel Falcao, Luke Shaw, Marcos Rojo, Daley Blind and Ander Herrera – who have been largely underwhelming, but Scholes is full of praise for the former Atletico Bilbao star.
The Spaniard cost a rather questionable £29m, and struggled for playing time in the first half of the season, but has begun to show signs that he could be worth the expense.
Scholes admits that the new signings have performed below the standard expected, but has been left impressed by Herrera.
“I think it was difficult for all the signings at first,’ Scholes was quoted by the Daily Mail as saying.
“The first six, seven, eight months were very difficult.
“Herrera’s been the one who’s impressed me most. He was another who struggled to get into the team early on but now he’s playing really well, really good football.
“He looks like he’s going to score goals, looks like he’s going to make goals, so he’s been a great addition. He’s only a young lad as well so hopefully can get even better.”
The 25-year-old has scored five times and registered four assists – playing a key role in the Manchester United’s superb form in the second half of the season.
He will be in the squad to face West Bromwich Albion on Saturday afternoon, as the Red Devils look to bounce back from the 3-0 defeat at the hands of Everton last weekend.
