According to TuttoMercatoWeb, the Croatia international is concerned about the potential arrival of Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure and fears he would lose his place in the side if he remained at the club.

He has therefore decided to seek a new challenge elsewhere and Liverpool, along with La Liga leaders Barcelona, lead the race to secure his signature.

The good news could not be more timely for the Merseyside outfit, following a damaging run of results and speculation about the future of head coach Brendan Rodgers.

An FA Cup semi-final surrender to underdogs Aston Villa condemned them to another season without silverware, and was followed by a goalless draw at West Bromwich Albion and last night’s 1-0 loss to Hull City, all but ending their chances of qualifying for the Champions League.

If he does arrive at Anfield, Kovacic would compete with the likes of Philippe Coutinho, Adam Lallana and Jordan Henderson for a place in the Reds midfield, although his flexibility also enables him to operate out wide.
