The Red Devils are anxious to keep hold of the Spain international but he is yet to put pen to paper on a new contract, with his deal little more than 12 months away from expiry.

Respected Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio claims on his website that Handanovic is viewed as a viable replacement if de Gea ends up leaving the club during the summer transfer window.

The Inter shot-stopper is also one year away from becoming a free agent, which means he could be available at a knock-down price. United have made an enquiry about his availability and will continue to monitor the situation with great interest.

De Gea has been in inspired form for Louis van Gaal’s side this term and when the defence in front of him was leaky in the early months of the campaign he kept his team in contests on more than one occasion with some eye-catching saves.

Slovenia international Handanovic has been an ever-present for Roberto Mancini’s side this season. The 30-year-old has made 34 appearances in all competitions for the San Siro giants.
