The 24-year-old has had a superb season in the Premier League this year, and is now being eyed up by the reigning European champions as a long-term replacement for current number one Iker Casillas.

United are hoping, however, that they can keep de Gea a little longer after his tremendous improvement this season, with The Sun claiming they want to strike a deal similar to their one with Cristiano Ronaldo – to keep him at the club for another year with an agreement for him to move to the Bernabeu afterwards.

Real may not settle for this, however, as they want to bring the Spanish shot-stopper to the club for next season, and will pursue other transfer targets for that role if they cannot lure him to La Liga this year.
