The Argentine international, who joined the Red Devils for a club-record £59.7m from Real Madrid last summer, has struggled in his first season in the Premier League, and perhaps looks unsettled and unhappy in English football.

Van Gaal admits the 27-year-old has not had a great season, and says that he plans to speak with him about the future over the summer, with some speculation that Paris Saint-Germain could still be ready to pay big money to lure him to the Parc des Princes.

Although the United manager did not comment on any particular clubs, he hinted that Di Maria may be allowed to move on if he chooses to do so, with the club themselves perhaps already thinking of replacements in the transfer market after rumours linking them to the likes of Gareth Bale.

“He cannot say that he has had a marvellous season here,” van Gaal is quoted in The Sun.

“I think Di Maria shall stay and he is working very hard. I am pleased with his attitude, so that is not a problem.

“Also, the manager and the club is always dependent on the opinion of the player himself. The player decides. We shall see what he decides.

“The decision is not only up to him because we have a contract.

“We’ll speak with each other about the future.
