The 22-year-old joined the Owls on loan in January and has scored three goals in 11 appearances for the second tier side. With Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie, Radamel Falcao, and James Wilson all ahead of the youngster in the Old Trafford pecking order, it is unlikely he will ever make an impact for his parent club.

In the same week that Andreas Pereira signed a new deal with the Red Devils another academy product looks likely to depart. He also seems keen to stay at Hillsborough.

Keane said: “I think as a whole it’s been positive. I have had plenty of minutes on the pitch and had a role to play in the team. There have been plenty of ups and downs and I’ll take a lot from it. I have to go back to United after the weekend and I’ll re-assess things.

“If my options are limited at United I will look at my options and I would like to think that this club would be one.”

United themselves have a problem up front at the moment, with van Persie and Falcao both out of form and looking unlikely to regain it. Despite this manager Louis van Gaal seems wary of throwing in 19-year-old Wilson in place of the more experienced duo.
