The Red Devils are keen to land Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels and Southampton right-back Nathaniel Clyne, and these two may be the first new additions to make their way to the club this summer.

United look in need of strengthening in defence after some unconvincing displays at the back this season, with Hummels and Clyne certainly looking like the calibre of player required to improve the team’s fortunes as they look to mount a stronger challenge for the Premier League title next term.

According to the Daily Star, van Gaal seemed to hint that United were closing in on the two deals when asked about his progress in the transfer market so far.

He told reporters he was already busy, saying: “This summer is very important, of course. We need balance in our selection. I cannot deny that. But we are very busy with that.”
