Just after the hour-mark, the Northern Irishman set up to hit a free-kick from around 25 yards out. Perhaps aware of the difficultly involved in trying to loop the ball over the wall and under the bar, Brunt decided to unleash a rocket at the goal and hope that it would be too vicious for David De Gea to react.

However, the midfielder’s drilled effort cannoned into his teammate Jonas Olsson, who was making a nuisance of himself and lurking around the wall, and flew like a bullet into the top corner.

The goal would have been greatly welcomed by the sides chasing a place in the Premier League’s top four, especially Liverpool and Tottenham. The Reds’ victory against Queens Park Rangers moved them to within four points of Louis van Gaal’s men and a place in next season’s Champions League, whilst Spurs have the opportunity to move to within the same margin against Manchester City tomorrow.
