Barcelona v Bayern Munich – KO: 19:45 BST
In a tie which would’ve been a wonderful final, Barcelona host Bayern Munich in the first-leg of the Champions League semi-final as they look to end their lean spell in Europe’s premier club competition.
The Catalan giants last lifted the trophy in 2011 under Pep Guardiola, the man they now have to get past in order to achieve the feat once again. The imprint of this Barcelona side still resembles much of what their former coach left behind, but there is certainly no room for sentiment on such an occasion.
Sensational trio Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez have notched up over 100 goals between them in all competitions and will certainly be looking to inflict pain on Guardiola’s Bayern Munich.
In terms of team news, Luis Enrique is almost at full strength and whilst Jeremy Mathieu is set to miss out, forgotten summer signing Thomas Vermaelen is set to be included in the match-day squad for the first time this season.
For Bayern, Guardiola continues to suffer from a lengthy injury list with star men Arjen Robben and Frank Ribery set to miss out. Defensive duo Holger Badstuber and David Alaba remain long-term absentees.
The Germain giants thrashed Barcelona is their last semi-final meeting; however under Guardiola, whether or not he can impose his philosophy on the team still tormenting Europe in his image will certainly prove to be a thrilling spectacle.
