The pair have worked together before while the 63-year-old was manager of the Dutch national team, and it would seem that he leveraged this relationship to bring the 21-year-old to Old Trafford. The Express state that a conversation with between player and Red Devils boss was the key moment in deciding Depay’s future. This looks likely to be a great move for the Red Devils, with the youngster firing his current club to the Eredivisie title with 21 goals in 28 league appearances so far.

The club confirmed on Twitter on Thursday that the move had been agreed between the clubs subject to the player having a medical. The Netherlands international will likely play on the left wing for United, leaving van Gaal with a conundrum over who to play on the other side.

There will be pressure to play record signing Angel Di Maria there, but Juan Mata has been performing well in the second half of the campaign and the Argentine is more used to the left wing.
