The 24-year-old has been linked to a move to Real Madrid, but his compatriot thinks that he is going to turn down a transfer to the Bernabeu. This will be great news for manager Louis van Gaal, who has been reliant on the former Atletico Madrid ace throughout this season. The keeper’s brilliant displays have helped the Red Devils to have the fourth best defence in the Premier League in terms of goals conceded.

The club four points ahead of fifth placed Liverpool, and favourites to qualify for the Champions League ahead of the Anfield outfit despite a run of three defeats. This may help to persuade the Spaniard to stick around a little longer.

Mendieta said: “Manchester United is a club, as a player, you want to play for. If they qualify for the Champions League, that’s important as a player. From what I know, David De Gea is happy to stay at Manchester United.”

However, this still doesn’t clear up why the goalie hasn’t signed a new deal with United to make clear his intentions. De Gea’s current contract finishes at the end of next season, and the longer it goes until he signs an extension the louder the rumours of his impending departure will become.
