Reds boss Brendan Rodgers was reportedly very interested in the young Dutchman and there was suggestion in the Express that the Merseyside outfit were favourites to land the 21-year-old but, not for the first time, they had a transfer target snatched from their grasp.
Not too long after the news broke on social media, a selection of Liverpool fans appeared to lay the blame firmly at the door of Rodgers, who has now lost out on the signatures of Alexis Sanchez, Willian, Victor Valdes and Mohamed Salah to rival clubs in the Barclays Premier League.
With his relationship with some Kop fans rocky at the minute, the prospect of failing to finish in the top four and therefore the inevitable struggle to attract top quality players to the club has seen the Northern Irishman come in for a world of abuse on social media.
Take a look at some of the best tweets from fans of the Anfield outfit:

Bid for Depay, end up with Scott Sinclair (probably). Liverpool’s transfer business is the perfect metaphor for the General Election. — Matthew Stanger (@MatthewStanger) May 7, 2015
Depay is added to the list of endless players we failed to sign. It’s getting beyond a joke now, something has to be done.

Lallana cost the same as Depay ???? WTF is wrong with our transfer policy?! — Indigo (@IndigoLFC) May 7, 2015
One meeting with Rodgers was all it took for Depay to decide against us, I bet.

Willian, Sanchez, Konoplyanka, Diego Costa, Depay, Salah, Shaqiri and now Depay. I can handle two or three, but our club is a joke now. — Liverpool GFN (@LiverpoolGFN) May 7, 2015
We’ve been monitoring Depay for the past 18 months & Rodgers even went to personally meet him. Just shows he can’t attract top players. #LFC
