Reds boss Brendan Rodgers was reportedly very interested in the young Dutchman and there was suggestion in the Express that the Merseyside outfit were favourites to land the 21-year-old but, not for the first time, they had a transfer target snatched from their grasp.

Not too long after the news broke on social media, a selection of Liverpool fans appeared to lay the blame firmly at the door of Rodgers, who has now lost out on the signatures of Alexis Sanchez, Willian, Victor Valdes and Mohamed Salah to rival clubs in the Barclays Premier League.

With his relationship with some Kop fans rocky at the minute, the prospect of failing to finish in the top four and therefore the inevitable struggle to attract top quality players to the club has seen the Northern Irishman come in for a world of abuse on social media.
