The experienced England international has been out of action since picking up an injury in the closing stages of the 4-2 win in the Manchester derby at Old Trafford last month.

It was first thought that the injury was not too serious, and he had been expected to return for the game against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday evening. Van Gaal had bad news in his press conference however, insisting the midfielder will not play again in the current campaign:

“Carrick is not available, it was more heavy than we thought,” the Dutchman told reporters (via the club’s official website).

“We tried everything but now we have to think about next season. He shall not play anymore this season, it’s better now to focus for him on next season and being fit to start,” he added.

The news will certainly be a blow for the Red Devils, as they are not yet guaranteed a top-four place. After losing their last three games in succession without scoring, they are now just four point clear of Liverpool with three games remaining, and are certainly looking over their shoulders.
