Brendan Rodgers is close to sealing his first signing of the summer – in the form of England Under-21 forward Danny Ings – who has just experienced the misery of relegation from the Premier League with the Clarets.

Liverpool Echo reporter James Pearce made the claim – via his Twitter account – that Ings is very close to swapping Turf Moor for Anfield, and that the Reds are also chasing James Milner.

Milner looks unlikely to sign a new contract with Manchester City, and the experience midfielder could be a superb steal for Liverpool – particularly with talisman Steven Gerrard leaving for the MLS in July.

Rodgers will need to seriously strengthen his squad in the summer if the Reds are to mount a title challenge next season.

With fourth-placed Manchester United beating Crystal Palace on Saturday evening, defeat to Premier League champions Chelsea on Sunday would see Liverpool’s slim chances of finishing in a Champions League qualifying spot crushed.
