The 24 year old Saints defender may well become Louis van Gaal’s second transfer window capture with the club having already confirmed the signing of PSV Eindhoven attacker Memphis Depay.

The Old Trafford side have opted to up their initial offer for the former Crystal Palace man with an £18m offer perhaps one the south-coast side are willing to consider.

Van Gaal’s keenness to get the deal done perhaps suggests the Dutch boss isn’t all that impressed by the efforts of Luis Antonio Valencia and Rafael, who have been the chief candidates for the right-back role this term, with the Ecuadorian being the current first choice for the role.

The Times also confirms that Man United have a deal in place to sign Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan with van Gaal seeking to get deals completed as early as possible this summer.
