City were tipped by many to provide a stern challenge to Chelsea for the title but they have not been able to recapture the form from last season and now are in a battle with their local rivals and Arsenal to finish as runners-up to the newly-crowned champions.

After crashing out of both domestic competitions following shock home defeats by Newcastle United and Middlesbrough, they were then knocked out of Europe at the first knock out stage by Barcelona meaning it will be a trophyless season for City and Zabaleta admits they should be doing better:

“This is a Manchester City side that want to win trophies, every season.” he told Sky Sports.

“The expectations and ambitions are really big and that’s why now we are a little disappointed about the season because we are out of the cups and Chelsea have won the ” title with four or five games to go.”

“I always expect change. Big clubs are very ambitious and want to sign big players. City are one of those clubs that wants to win trophies next season and that is why you can expect some change.” he added.

The former champions will move three points clear of Arsenal with a win against relegation threatened Queens Park Rangers at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday afternoon in their penultimate home game of the season.
