The Red Devils announced that they had signed the winger from PSV Eindhoven last week on a four year contract for a £25 million transfer fee, subject to a medical. They had to beat both Merseyside rivals Liverpool and PSG to the 21-year-old according to the Dutch side.

Manager Louis van Gaal may have wanted to sign the youngster because he has worked with him before while in charge of the Holland national team. The midfielder was a part of the Netherlands side that the 63-year-old guided to a third place finish at the last World Cup.

To add to this Depay has scored 22 goals in 29 league appearances to fire PSV to the Eredivisie title this season. Neville believes that the wide man can transfer this form to the bigger stage of the Premier League.

The 40-year-old said: “They do need strength in that area. So what United are buying is potential, obviously someone who has scored goals in the Dutch league, but looking at some of the clips, I think Dutch skilled wingers for me are by far the best at understanding their position.

“In terms of his pace, his touch, his ability to score goals, his good movement… it is all about whether he can settle down in Manchester. He’ll need some time and can transfer that ability he has shown for PSV into Manchester United. It is a completely different field.”

He added: “He’s got a lot of different facets to his game, he’s got a lot of different things in his armour.”
