Juan Mata admits he’s unsure over Real Madrid target David de Gea’s Manchester United future

Manchester United playmaker Juan Mata has admitted that he simply doesn’t know if his Old Trafford team-mate David de Gea will be staying or going in the summer.

The stopper has been linked with a switch to Real Madrid for much of the current season, and the Spanish giants are expected to make a move in the upcoming transfer window.

The goalkeeper’s current contract at the Theatre of Dreams is set to expire at the end of the 2015-16 campaign, and with no extension having been signed, his future in Louis van Gaal’s side is uncertain beyond the close of this term.

In an interview with IBTimes, Mata spoke of his ‘hope’ that de Gea chooses to remain in Manchester.

“I understand how importance he is for us.

“(In the last 2-1 victory) against Crystal Palace he proved it again with a save that gave us the three points,” the Spain international added.

“I wish him to stay. Being selfish, I obviously hopes him to remain with us.

“He gives us many points.”

The Spaniard also refused to be drawn in on any questions regarding his team-mate’s links to the Santiago Bernabeu, and said, “I don’t know. To be honest, I don’t know. Ask him because I don’t know.”

Following the Red Devils’ victory over Crystal Palace at the weekend, Manchester United have all but secured a place in the top-four – with closest rivals Liverpool only scraping a draw against champions Chelsea on Sunday.
