Van Persie has one year remaining on his reported £250,000-a-week contract at Old Trafford, and faces a fight to force his way back into the starting XI next season after struggling with injuries for the majority of this campaign.

While his team-mate Di Maria, who is also earning the same amount of money, has struggled to live up to his hefty £59.7million price-tag and has consistently found himself among the substitutes bench since the turn of the year, with manager Louis van Gaal preferring Ashley Young in that wide left position.

If The Red Devils can find buyers for both players it would save a massive £500,000-a-week on their wage bill, and could also open the door to bringing Bale back to the Premier League after two seasons away.

The Welshman has endured a difficult second campaign at the Santiago Bernabeu as he has struggled to replicate the form of his debut year when he scored vital goals in both Champions League and Copa Del Rey finals as Madrid clinched the double last season.

He was at the forefront of more anger from a section of Los Blancos supporters, who vented their frustrations with the winger once again following their European semi-final exit on Wednesday night.

There were strong rumours in The Independent on Thursday morning that a deal for Bale to join United in the summer was ‘almost done deal’ as claimed by journalist John Richardson.
