Arsenal target Petr Cech set to join Paris Saint Germain instead

Paris Saint Germain have stepped up their interest in Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech, as the French champions gear up for what looks set to be an intense summer transfer battle.

The news will come as a blow to Arsenal, who were thought to be heavily interest in the experienced Premier League stopper. Unfortunately for fans of the Gunners, Arsene Wenger has moved to play down his side’s interest, claiming his squad already has three world-class keepers.

He said: “I don’t deal with the ‘if’. We have world-class goalkeepers, we’ve got three.”

Arsenal fans could be forgiven for disagreeing with that statement. David Ospina’s howler against Swansea City on Monday condemned the Gunners to a rare defeat, while the Colombian has only been playing due to the struggles of Woijech Szczesny.

It was hoped that a move for Cech – who, as the Daily Mirror reports, is free to leave the Premier League champions this summer – would set them up perfectly ahead of their upcoming 2015-16 campaign. However, they now look set to be disappointed.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho may also welcome interest from a foreign club, as he’s unlikely to want Cech to join a domestic rival, so if Arsenal are to get their man then they will have to move quickly.

Cech’s agent, Viktor Kolar, said earlier this week: “Petr still has a contract that ends in a year. I can confirm, however, that we have been permitted by Chelsea to negotiate with interested parties. Petr has confirmed his interest to play regularly at a top club.

“That’s the task that we are now working on, but other than that there has not been any other change in the terms of Petr Cech’s employment and the transfer period only begins on July 1.”
