According to the Daily Mirror, Milner will forgo the opportunity to play Champions League football in order to play more regularly in his favoured central midfield role, which he believes he will do at Anfield following the impending departure of Steven Gerrard.

The Reds are prepared to go all out for the deal, with Brendan Rodgers set to offer the 29-year-old a contract worth in the region of £100,000-per-week, making him one of the club’s highest paid players.

Milner also favours the relatively local move to Merseyside as it means that he won’t have to move his young family to London.

The former Aston Villa man is also wanted by current manager, Manuel Pellegrini. But after years of frustration at City, where he has regularly been played out of a position, Liverpool now looks his most likely destination.

Milner has played just short of 200 games for City in all competitions, scoring 16 times. Six of those have come this season, making it his most profitable campaign since he joined the club back in 2011. He has won two Premier League titles, the FA Cup and the League Cup.
